Counting one by one and putting 40 packed meals each in a plastic bag before carrying it to the military truck, Billyjay Delos Reyes, 40, chats happily every now and then with the soldiers he is working with, his disposition as warm as the sun that day.

Billy is not a soldier; he was one of the volunteers who came to lend a hand during the joint feeding efforts of Operation Blessing and the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) Mobile Kitchen. For 3 days, Billy, together with his wife Salvacion and two more companions, assisted in packing the meals before the soldiers distribute them to different areas in Barangay Pag-Asa, Quezon City.

“We can help even though we do not have a lot of money. If we really wanted to help, we can use our time, we can provide manpower, Billy said, his voice filled with conviction.

Billy regularly volunteers not just for the AFP’s Mobile Kitchen project; he also seizes every opportunity to help families severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by providing labor to different organizations.

Last February, he and four other volunteers helped repack food bags at Operation Blessing’s warehouse in Pasig City.

Billy’s passion for helping others springs from his heart, not because he feels stronger, healthier, or more blessed than others, but because he understands the struggles of many families during this pandemic through his own family’s struggles.

“I told myself, if I became a volunteer, I don’t want to be an ordinary one. I want to give my time and strength in helping others.”

Billy also shared that there is immeasurable joy in helping others.

“When you see that those whom you have helped appreciate you with a smile or a simple ‘thank you,’ it feels so good. It inspires me to help more.”
