Leonita, a 63-year-old Matigsalug widow, does farming to support herself despite her old age and vulnerability. But because of her age and the negative implications of this pandemic, she could not go out anymore. She now relies on the assistance given by her children and the aid from the government. At times, she and her family would eat root crops to sustain themselves for the day. Due to financial constraint, they opted to make their own masks to be protected from COVID19.
Operation Blessing extended relief aid to more than a hundred families in Brgy. Kalangangan, one of the remotest barangays in San Fernando, Bukidnon, Davao del Norte. Most of the residents belong to Matigsalug Tribe who were affected by Typhoon Vinta and armed conflict. This area is also called “Tolda,” since the family’s shelter is just made from a tent.
“Leonita along with the tribal members are so grateful upon receiving the face masks along with hygiene kits and food packs. “You were an answer to our prayers. In our greatest need, you are here to help us. Thank you, Operation Blessing, thank you, Lord.” – Leonita Lipadas
